Alumni Stories

Jasmine Okoye – alumni story

Harris Academy attended: Harris Academy Chobham

Current role: Learning and Development Specialist

JasmineTell us a bit about your background.

I’ve always been passionate about helping young people unlock their potential, especially those who don’t always get the same opportunities as others. My goal is to find creative ways to support their development, opening doors that might not have been available otherwise. I strongly believe in connecting young talent with early career professionals to build a workforce that truly reflects diversity and inclusion.

What path did you take after school?

After finishing at Harris Academy Chobham, I continued my studies at Beth’s Grammar School and later at Pearson College London. My career has taken me in different directions- from financial analysis to marketing- but I found my real passion in learning and development. Working as a Talent Development Coordinator at Munich Re helped me realise how much I enjoy shaping career pathways, and I’ve since taken on freelance roles that allow me to make an impact in this space.

What motivates and inspires you?

Seeing young people succeed because they were given the right guidance and opportunities is what keeps me going. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that the work I do- whether through my role as a school governor or as the founder of Chi Chi’s Young Minds- has a real impact. I want to make sure every young person, no matter their background, has the tools and confidence to carve out their own future.

What are your current plans?

Right now, I’m working as a freelance Learning and Development Specialist, partnering with professionals and organizations to help cultivate diverse talent. Through Chi Chi’s Young Minds, I’m continuing to create initiatives that support young people in fresh and meaningful ways. Being a governor for Harris Academy Chobham also gives me the opportunity to influence policies that directly benefit students.

Do you have any advice for current students?

Your path doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s- take the opportunities that excite you, even if they seem unexpected. Surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you and never stop learning. Most importantly, trust that you have something valuable to offer, and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.

Shahena Khanum – alumni story

Harris Academy attended: Harris Academy Chobham

Current role: Teacher at Harris Academy Rainham

ShahenaTell us a bit about your background.

For as long as I can remember, I have been passionate about teaching and learning. The idea of sharing knowledge, helping others understand complex ideas, and inspiring students has always fascinated me. My goal has always been to become a sixth-form teacher, and I have worked towards gaining the experience and qualifications necessary to succeed in this field.

What path did you take after school?

After leaving Harris Chobham, I pursued my studies at UCL and Westminster University. I gained valuable teaching experience through my PGCE at Barking & Dagenham College, where I taught Access to Social Work and Social Science. Alongside this, I worked in various roles, including as a front desk administrator and mental health coordinator. This helped my communication and organisational skills.

What motivates and inspires you?

Seeing students grow in confidence and ability is my greatest motivation. Teaching is not just about delivering content-it’s about mentoring, inspiring, and making a difference in students’ lives. I find joy in helping young people unlock their potential and develop a love for learning.

What are your current plans?

I am currently a full-time Sociology and Psychology teacher at Harris Academy Rainham Sixth Form- I went from a Harris education to becoming a Harris educator! My role involves lesson planning, teaching, marking, and mentoring students. This experience has reinforced my passion for teaching, and I plan to continue developing my expertise to become the best educator and mentor I can be.

Do you have any advice for current students?

Believe in yourself and your abilities. Success doesn’t come overnight. Success requires dedication, resilience, and a willingness to learn from challenges. Take every opportunity to gain experience, ask for help when needed, and most importantly, pursue a career that truly inspires you.
