Knowledge organisers
We also believe in giving students the tools to take charge of their learning, which is why we integrate Knowledge Organisers into our teaching strategy. These organisers distil key information for each subject into a concise and structured format, making them an invaluable revision aid. Research supports that regular, active retrieval practice - through methods such as self-testing, flashcards, and writing exercises - not only strengthens memory but also deepens understanding. Moreover, consistent engagement with these organisers can help reduce test anxiety by making assessments feel more routine.
Tips on using knowledge organisers
Here are some tips on how you can support your child in using their knowledge organiser:
- Set aside 15-20 minutes per evening for them to actively study their knowledge organiser. The key is consistent, distributed practice over time.
- Help them follow the "Fetch, Flip, Check, Repeat" process. Have them fetch a section to memorise, flip the page over, write everything they can recall, check work for accuracy, and repeat until mastered.
- Ask them to show you their corrections in a different coloured pen so they can monitor their progress.
- Quiz them on various sections and vocabulary. Flashcards also help reinforce definitions.
- Praise their effort and perseverance. The more practice retrieving the knowledge, the better they will retain it.
- Discuss any material they are struggling with. Work together to improve comprehension.
