Black History Month

Last month the historian Tony Warner of Black History Walks delivered an eye opening and inspirational assembly followed by interactive workshops with our year 10 students on Black World History.

Paula Perry, published co-author of her curriculum approved text book, Black British History and Founder of You4Us, visited Chobham on a Monday afternoon to speak with staff about teaching within their context as part of Black History Month. Staff were so inspired by her talk, that they formed a queue to pick up their signed copies!

The year 5, 7 and 8 students were treated to an art lesson by the world renowned picture book Illustrator Dapo Adeola. He taught the students about the history of Black superheroes and supported each of the students to learn how to draw their own superhero characters.

Last month our Friday lunch menu will feature a Black History Month themed lunch menu. We have already enjoyed stew chicken, rice and peas with sweet potato – so tasty!

Our year 12 History Students enjoyed an exciting Black History Walk tour of London that would definitely encourage the students to think about the history that surrounds them in a new and refreshing way.

The year 12 and a handful of the year 10 Media students were visited by established professionals from the Media industry to speak with the students about the exciting careers that are available to them. These visitors were the Voice Over Artist and Actor Nii Odartei Evans (BBC, 1Xtra); Newsreader and Presenter Claudia-Liza Armah (5 News, Sky News, The Independent, The Evening Standard); Office Manager Dionne Mascoll (NBC Universal, Sony Music); Designer and Consultant, Richard Mkoloma (Sean John, Puma, Fila, Adidas); and an EMEA Systems Engineer, Chris Crichlow (YouTube, Google, O2 events).
